How This Process Works

The Super Visa is designed specifically for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It offers the flexibility of long-term visits without the need to apply for a new visa each time.

Applicants must:

  • Apply from outside Canada
  • Complete a medical examination
  • Provide proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company (valid for at least one year)
  • Receive a letter of invitation from their child or grandchild in Canada

Proof of income from the host is also required to demonstrate that they meet the minimum necessary income to financially support their visiting family member.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Super Visa, the applicant must:

  • Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a valid passport and travel documents
  • Prove they have sufficient ties to their home country (such as property, employment, or family obligations)
  • Provide medical insurance valid in Canada for a minimum of one year
  • Undergo an immigration medical exam
  • Show proof of funds from their host meeting the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) threshold
  • Submit a written invitation from their Canadian child or grandchild
