Work Permit Applicaton

A Work Permit allows foreign nationals to legally work in Canada, either on a temporary or long-term basis, depending on the type of permit issued. With Canada’s diverse labor market and high demand in various sectors such as technology, healthcare, trades, and hospitality, there are multiple pathways for skilled and semi-skilled workers to obtain employment in the country.

There are two main types of work permits:

  1. Employer-Specific Work Permit – tied to a specific job and employer
  2. Open Work Permit – allows you to work for any employer in Canada (available in limited situations)
How This Process Works

To apply for a Canadian work permit, you generally need:

  • A valid job offer from a Canadian employer
  • In most cases, a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada proves that hiring a foreign worker won’t negatively impact Canadian job seekers
  • Completion of relevant application forms and biometrics
  • Medical exams and police certificates (if applicable)

You may also be eligible for a work permit through international agreements, post-graduate programs, spousal sponsorship, or bridging programs while waiting for permanent residency.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a work permit, you must:

  • Show proof of a job offer and meet the job requirements
  • Be in good health and willing to undergo a medical exam if required
  • Have no criminal record
  • Prove you will leave Canada once your permit expires (unless transitioning to permanent status)
  • Provide biometric data, depending on your country of residence
