Work Visa (LMIA) Applicaton

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a key step for foreign nationals looking to obtain a Work Visa in Canada. An LMIA is a document that a Canadian employer may need to obtain before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA shows that there is a genuine need for a foreign worker to fill the job and that no Canadian worker is available to do it.

Once the LMIA is approved, foreign workers can apply for a Work Permit, which allows them to legally live and work in Canada for the designated employer and job.

How This Process Works

To begin, the employer must submit an LMIA application to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). If approved, a copy of the LMIA and a job offer letter are sent to the worker, who then submits a work permit application.

This process is especially common in high-demand sectors such as:

  • Healthcare
  • Construction
  • Transportation
  • Hospitality
  • Agriculture

Work permits issued under LMIA are employer-specific, meaning the worker must remain with the same employer listed on the permit.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for an LMIA-based work visa, the foreign worker must:

  • Have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer
  • Receive a positive LMIA from the employer
  • Meet the requirements of the job position (education, language, experience)
  • Prove they will leave Canada once the permit expires
  • Submit biometrics, and possibly undergo a medical exam or provide police certificates

At KGH Immigration Ltd., we assist both employers and workers in understanding and navigating the LMIA and work permit process with precision and care. Contact us today to take the next step in your Canadian work journey.
